Now i’m a girl of my word. Remember i promised back in January that i’d share the results of my la mer voyage following my indulgent seasonal skincare spree? One slight problem. Shortly after my buoyant post, so full of optimism and promise, well, this happened…

Awkward.

I waited almost six years to finally bite the bullet and make a la mer purchase, every day tentatively removing the moisturising soft cream tub from its luxurious outer packaging and meticulously handling the spatula to acquire the perfect amount of product for pure application precision. Did i over-think the ritual? Did the hefty price tag and sheer calibre of the product ultimately amount to too much pressure for me to handle? Did i watch too much Frozen over Christmas and take Queen Elsa’s advice too literally in this case?

Whatever the deeper cause behind my clumsiness, the most important thing when faced with any form of adversity is always to try your very best to make a good thing out of a big old mess (a metaphor for so many of life’s larger lessons). So what wisdom can i impart from this so-called la night mer? None other that a handy little beauty tip, which is the perfect environmentally friendly solution for such a cosmetic crisis…

I’m always quite reluctant to throw away my empty beauty bottles and tubs, especially if i’ve splashed out a fair amount on the product. So as i stared hopelessly at the luscious la mer moisturising cream splattered across my bathroom floor, once the initial shock subsided, i remembered i had kept an empty bottle of Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base in my drawer; i guess i’d been saving it for a rainy day. Without hesitation (assuming the 5 second rule also applies to beauty products) i began scooping up any untainted product i could salvage with the la mer spatula and placing it gently in its new home.

…et voilà.

I’ll never know if the exposure to the elements or the dramatic exodus to a new container ultimately affected the efficacy of the product, but it sure felt good not to wave my white flag and admit complete defeat.

So next time you think about throwing away your empty beauty bottles, remember they just might come in handy one day when you least expect it.

And in case you were wondering…i still have the broken la mer tub stashed away in my drawer for a rainy day. You never know ;)
